Introduction to Math Facts
Many of our kids seem to be having issues with math. I believe this is due to a lack of Math Fact Memorization. If you think about math like a sport, it can help in the understanding of this analogy. Let's imagine playing basketball. You cannot play in a game without learning how to dribble, shoot, and pass. This is the same concept in math. Think of math being our sport and our math facts as the dribbling, shooting, and passing. We have to have the basics mastered before we can move on.
During math, we have a lot of different processes to learn. However, we are wasting our energy when we are worried about what 3 x 8 is, and not the actual steps of the problem. Let's work with our kids 5 - 10 minutes each night until these questions are as easy as "When is your birthday?"
I have split these Math Fact Websites into 3 sections. Scroll down and look for the section we have discussed (or that you just want to work with). Below is the order they are in:
--Addition--
--Multiplication Fact Families--
--All Math Fact Games--
--Online Flash Cards--
Additional Note: More reps in one area (each family) is much better than skipping around between sections.

Addition
Addition is a big skill we overlook. Having these mastered is just as essential as when we talk about learning our multiplication facts.
On this website, start on level one and build up. If you feel uncomfortable with explaining how to work with negative numbers in the later stages, Khan Academy has a great lesson. (Link for Khan Academy is in the "HELPFUL LINKS" tab.) |
Have your kiddo be an Allstar for the single digit problems (8+5= 13)
Reasoning: after they master single digits, all they have to remember is to add up the place values.
(If that doesn't make sense, email/call me and I can go into a more detailed explanation.)

Multiplication Fact Families
I would suggest starting with this website:Click 'Play' (Then you will see the website that is to the right)

2 = It's a skip count or just "doubling the number".

Technically we have only 3 more to learn because 8 x 7 is the same as 7 x 8 ; ) |
All Math Fact Games
Not only is this website for Multiplication Fact Families being mixed up, you can always do any other operation (addition, subtraction, and division) as well as fractions and integers.
This website is for when all the families have been memorized OR if they get bored and want to change up the game. **Change keeps their attention until they find the game they like the most** Click the drop down for 'Math Subject' and click on whatever you want them working with. You can change the grade if you would like as well for a variety of games.
